Ambient Computing For CSS (CSSSA 2012)

Presenter: Stephen Guerin

Title: Explorations in Ambient Computing for Computational Social Science

Abstract: Beyond prediction and optimization, a major use of computational models in the social sciences is to facilitate communication among decision makers. This tutorial and hands-on demonstration will review techniques of ambient computing where agent-based models are projected out into the room for interactive participatory modeling sessions. A GIS-integrated agent-based framework will be introduced that runs in HTML5/Javascript for widespread deployment on desktop browsers as well as mobile tablets and smartphones. The integration of mobile devices as controllers, deployed sensors and remote viewers will be reviewed in the context of agent-oriented tools for smart cities. The Acequia project will be demonstrated as a distributed publish/subscribe infrastructure for deploying real-time distributed models within an HTML5 ecology.
