Ruth Schmidt will present Behavioral pattern languages: Emerging approaches to systems-level behavioral challenges

Cristopher Moore will present Pretrial Risk Assessment on the Ground: Lessons from New Mexico

You are invited to participate in the Computational Social Science (CSS2024) annual conference. The conference will be held in-person at The Drury Plaza Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 24 – 27, 2024, near the historic central plaza in downtown Santa Fe.

Call for Papers, Posters, SIGs, Workshops, and Tutorials

CSSSA defines computational social science broadly, as the theory-driven, nontrivial use of computational methods to analyze, model, simulate, and explore social systems and their dynamics. We explicitly expand beyond the simple analysis of data gathered from a social system and explore how these signals correspond to social science theory. In this way we can explore generating mechanisms that underlie social dynamics using agent-based simulation and other computational methods.

CSSSA continues to be keenly interested in enabling the field of Computational Social Science to achieve broad impacts. To that end, we extend a special welcome to papers, posters, and discussions that explore how Computational Social Science can help us address many of today’s complex challenges.

The CSSSA is an inclusive organization. As such we welcome submissions from all, regardless of background, institutional affiliation, or any other characteristic. Submissions are evaluated on scientific merit, relevance to the conference, and impact on the field.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation
    • Tools and Frameworks
    • Validation techniques
    • Computational infrastructure to support ABMs
    • Participatory ABM use
  • Sociocultural Analyses
    • Social network analysis
    • Cultural change dynamics
    • Economic dynamics
  • Big data analytics, Geospatial Analyses, or New CSS related datasets
  • Theoretical foundations, Ethical considerations, and the Future of CSS
  • Public health, Policy, Governance
    • Disease spread and mitigation dynamics
    • Use of CSS in policy analysis and policy development
    • Use of CSS in institution design, improvement, or analysis
  • Case studies and reports
    • Reports on impact or value of CSS analyses
    • CSS techniques in policy development or analysis

Submissions: The CSS2024 Program Committee invites original papers and posters concerning computational models and analysis of social phenomena. Models from all social science disciplines are welcomed. All submissions, including posters, will be subject to peer review. The PC and conference organizers may request that submissions for papers be converted into posters depending on scheduling and content.

Papers: Papers should be between 3,000 and 5,000 words in length, including all ?gures, tables, notes, references, and appendices. ODD documentation of models is encouraged and can be attached to a submission without counting against the word limit. The paper submission deadline is June 30.

Posters: Poster submissions require only an ~800 word abstract for submission. They should be clearly marked as poster submissions in the title. Poster abstract submissions are due June 30. Accepted posters will require a one slide summary due at the beginning of the conference and used to support the author’s 2 minute summary presented immediately before the poster session. Submission details for the one slide summary will be provided at the start of the conference.

Special Interest Groups (SIG): CSS2024 will include SIG sessions before the full conference. If you are interested in organizing a SIG workshop or tutorial, please send a brief description to conference@computationalsocialscience.org by May 30th. SIG sessions can take a wide variety of forms, ranging from tutorials and workshops to group discussions or hackathons. SIGs that are approved by the conference organizers will be announced and provided with meeting space. When planning your SIG event please make sure to include an estimated duration of the event in your proposal. The deadline for SIG proposal submissions is May 30.

Paper Publication: All CSS2024 accepted papers are eligible for publication in the proceedings.

Awards: This year we will have three awards. The award for Best Paper carries a $500 prize sponsored by the Computational Social Science Society of the Americas. The award for Exceptional Policy Analysis in a Poster carries a $300 prize sponsored by Complexity and Policy Studies (CAPS). Finally, we have a floating award that is loosely coupled to the “theme” of the conference – it carries a $200 prize sponsored by the Computational Social Science Society of the Americas. In past years this prize has been awarded to “new voices” in the field and to the paper that demonstrated the greatest community impact.
